Iowa’s EPSDT Care for Kids team recommends a recent article in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, “Mental Health Surveillance Among Children – United States, 2013 to 2019.”
From the article Summary:
Noting the important role that mental health plays in the short- and long-term physical health of children and youth, and in their success in education, social relationships, and employment, the authors looked at federal data systems that collect data on indicators of mental health, including mental disorders. According to the authors, these data confirm that mental disorders among children are “a substantial health concern.”
During the 2013-2019 period, prevalent disorders diagnosed among U.S. children and adolescents included:
- Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and anxiety
- Experienced a major depressive episode
- Reported persistently feeling sad or hopeless
- Seriously considered attempting suicide
Data also included:
- children and youth who had died by suicide
- those who had received mental health services
